Ayn Rand, the author of our book ANTHEM, believed in a special philosophy called OBJECTIVISM.
She believed that facts and values were "objective" realities. A thinking person can only grasp them through reason. According to Rand, what you perceive is true if logic says so. Actions are ethical if they fulfill your needs as a thinking being.
Reason is the only basis for intellectual and moral judgments.
Ayn Rand did not believe in faith, and subjective feelings.
She believed that individual life formed the standard of all values, and "rational selfishness" was a person's appropriate motive.
In addition, Rand thought that capitalism was the only truly moral economic system.
Task 1: What do you think about her philosophy? Do you think that "reason" is everything? Do you think that "rational selfishness" is good for people? Do you have "faith"? Would you agree with her OBJECTIVISM, or would you be against it?
Task 2: Ayn Rand grew up in communist Russia. She liked capitalism, which is typical of America and the Western world. What do you think about capitalism?
